Is it possible to a rename folder with a long file name in the recovery
console from the install CD?

Would greatly appreciate some help.

I think so but I haven't tried. Have you? In general I recommend you make
yourself a boot CD such as a Bart PE boot CD. It is far more versatile and
powerful than the Recovery Console. It lets you rename anything and it gives
you access to any file or folder. It also lets you run tools such as
regedit.or robocopy.

If you mean long filenames as opposed to 8.3 filenames, yes. If you
mean path too deep files, no. What exact problem are you having that
requires you to work files from the Recovery Console?

Many thanks for your reply. Although the Microsoft website says in many
places you can rename folders in recovery console, I have yet to see a way
of doing it. RENAME only works on files.

I am currently looking into this and thanks again.

Here are the RC commands you have available:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

As you can see, there is no rename folder option.

Why don't you rename it from a normal boot, or what is the issue that
you think will be resolved by renaming a folder (what is the real
problem)?

Can you reveal some of the many places Microsoft website says you can
rename folders with RC?

I would like to be able to understand that.

Old motherboard gave up the ghost and I was hoping to rename the Doucments
and Settings folder in case a new instalation of XP deleted these folders.
The install instructions said these folders may be deleted on install.

Please define the term "new instalation of XP." Are you planning on
performing a Clean Install or a Repair Install? If the former, that
means everything will be created from scratch.

Also, please post a link to these instructions you are referring to.

A repair install, over the top of the old one.

When I run the install disk, at the same time it says it will delete the
existing Windows directory.

If you are just trying to go through the file system - do it in WIndows. ;-)

http://www.ubcd4win.com/
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

Creating either of those would give you a CD you could boot with and use a
GUI environment and access your files and folders, rename them, copy
to/from, etc.

Doing an actual repair installation?

Your files/folders will be safe. You don't want to go and renaming anything
in this case because the purpose of doing a repair installation is to repair
the Windows installation without removing the other stuff installed -
keeping it in place. You rename the directories - you will be performing a
clean install - cannot even call it parallel because it won't see it
anymore.

Do it right...

One examplehttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

To quote the relevent section:
"Use, copy, rename, or replace operating system files and folders"

What is there to understand?

Do you interpret that sentence to mean you can rename a folder?

Read it like this:

Use copy
Use rename
Or replace operating system files and folders

RC is limited, but useful. Renaming a folder is not within it's
powers.

If you are replacing a MB, and want to use your original HDD, you
should have said so. There is a process for doing that but it has
nothing to do with RC.

Do you need to a good article that describe the best way to replace a
MB into an old working XP environment, or are you well on your way
with the information you have?

Once more, please post a link to these instructions you are referring
to. Deleting the existing Windows directory is a *Clean* Install, not a
Repair Install!

Here are directions to perform a Repair Install on a system with XP
Home, SP2 or SP3:

http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxphome/sp2sp3installxpcdrepair/indexfullpage.htm

To be on the safe side, you should always copy all your data before
performing a Repair Install.

Many thanks, I have now achieved what I wanted through a different route.

I realised that RC wasn't able to rename a folder which is a shame.
