If the file's old name includes an extension that Windows "knows" is
associated with a particular program, then Windows (not Word!) will warn you
when your renaming will change the extension. It doesn't actually know
whether the file will become unusable -- that's something you'll have to
understand. It also doesn't mean the file will be damaged in any way; it
just means you won't be able to open it in the usual program by
double-clicking its icon. If you're sure you're doing the right thing, just
click OK when the message appears.

This is one of the reasons you should always display extensions in Windows
Explorer (which also displays them in various Save and Open dialogs). If
they aren't visible, open Windows Explorer, click Tools > Folder Options >
View, and uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types". IMHO checking
this by default was one of Microsoft's worst mistakes.
