Rename a file

all my computers have picture files that do not need the file extention .jpg
in the name. Though it is a jpg file it reads just the simple name.. ie:
flower
On my friends computer.. all the names have to have .jpg at the end ie
flower .jpg and if you try to just rename it flower without the jpg of course
you get the warning that it will be unreadable... how come mine reads just
flower for file name and all his files need .jpg at the end??
does anyone have an explanation?? Stumped here
this is all for win xp

========================
Open a folder and go to...
Tools / Folder Options / View tab...

Uncheck the box...
"Hide extensions for known file types"
Apply / OK.
