removing win xp safely

i had the win xp pro installed in my computer recently (about a month ago) and i have had nothing but problems since. i lost my sound, my email program (msn 8 and internet exployer) keep messing up. i have had to unistall and reinstall the email program twice. i had a program that i really enjoyed and now i have lost it and can't seem to recover it. i lost my sound etc,etc..... i only have a Intel pentium II and imagine that is the whole kit-n-kaboodle about the whole thing, i had 1.57 GB of free space left before now i only have 348 MB. i did a sound check with the r click.....to device manager and uninstalled the sound devices (as they were not being read ) and then restarted and xp did not restore sound. i lost my printer, it does not feed.....i'm not so sure that is because of xp but ........anyway, it seems to be more trouble than its worth. i like the xp but i don't need it. i had windows 98 before this and everything worked fine. my question, can i unistall wind xp pro completely so that my space is restored and then install my old win 98... i still have my registration number for the 98 and all the info i need to install it.. i have reinstalled the windows 98 before so i know to go to bios and enter the install to read from the cd and not the harddrive......but i don't want to make bad things worse so could anyone tell me if i can do this? if i can not uninstall the xp, can i free up my hard drive space so that i get back the space i need. i try to download now and i get the message that i don't have enough space. i have tried to use msn 8 as my default email but when i double click on the butterfly the hour glass shows for a couple of seconds and nothing happens. my sign on screen does not come up.. to be truthful, i'm tired of trying to fix all these problems and would rather just go back to win 98....please tell me this is possible.....i really don't think this computer is set up to handle the xp as it is a very old one....an Intel Pentium II Family 6 model 3, speed 233 mhz with a total capacity of only 4.88GB....so if you could help, please do.
thank you i also have the 3 1/2 floppy start up disc that my brother made for me to help me with the window 98 troubleshooting.
