The C-drive crashed on my main computer, so I re-installed XP,
downloaded and installed all the Microsoft updates for it and am in
the process of recovering a mountain of applications. Fortunately my
personal data on this machine resides on other hard drives.
When the newly installed XP boots, I now get two very unnecessary
displays. (1) I must click on a user icon before boot will complete
and (2) a balloon pops up reminding me that my firewall is turned
off. The first prevents unsupervised reboots and the second is
especially annoying because I have a connection-blocking firewall
running a separate LAN that actually connects to the Internet.
Once before, when re-installing XP, I managed to get rid of these
displays, but that was over a year ago and I took no notes. If
anyone can point me in the right direction, such as the right keyword
for use with XP Help, I'd appreciate it very much. This time I'll
certainly make a note to keep with the XP CD!
Thank you for your attention.
