Need Advice - computer shutting down during program install

J

Jim

Dual boot system with XP Pro on C drive and Windows 7 on D drive. I have
re-installed several different release versions of Windows 7 on drive D over
the past several few months with never a problem.

Today when I try to re-install any version of Windows 7 to drive D, my
computer just powers down abruptly, sometimes very quickly, other times
after the install is almost complete!! This never happened before and I
can't figure what is going on.

I installed a game program just yesterday with no problems.

Suggestions appreciated.

Asking for suggestions about Windows 7 in an XP group is not the
smartest thing to do.

Sudden power-offs without restarts are often an indication of hardware
failure. Heat is often the cause, and components damaged by heat seldom
heal.

Thanks for your reply Patrick.

Yes I agree, it looks like it may be a hardware problem but I just can't put
my finger on what may be failing since XP runs just fine on drive C.

This problem arose since I decided to re-install the latest build of Windows
7 on drive D. The computer will suddenly powers off, either as the OS is
being installed or during setup. I even substituted another drive, same
problem.

I don't feel this is a Windows 7 issue. Appreciate if someone could give me
a suggestion on what hardware may be at fault. The dvd has been used
successfully to install other apps & game programs.

So it's not the drive.

Any hardware other than the hard disk. I'm not being facetious.

It's very difficult (and expensive) to diagnose hardware failures.
Frequently, it's done by substitition with known-good components, and that
implies that you *have* replacement components at hand.

Sorry, but there aren't a lot of shortcuts in this sort of thing.
