Removing TrueVector Service

J

Jeff

I've been getting errors about TrueVector Device driver not loading,
after investigating I found it was related to a file call vsdatant.sys
it is related to Zone Lab file, which I do not have on my computer.
Once I deleted the file, I get even more errors:
"TrueVector engine: [SAPI] 253 C:\WINDOWS\system32\vsdatant.sys"

How do I get rid of this ??? The program file(s) are not installed on my
machine, so how do I get rid of them ?

thanx

How did you remove ZoneAlarm? Did you just delete the program folder?
or did you remove ZoneAlarm from "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control
Panel? NEVER remove programs by just deleting their program folder.
This typically leaves orphan files all over the place. It also leaves
orphan Registry entries everywhere.

Your solution may be to
1) Reinstall ZoneAlarm
2) Right-click on the "Uninstall ZoneAlarm" entry in ZoneAlarm's entry
in "Start|All Programs|ZoneLabs"
3) Choose "Properties"
4) Click on the "Shortcut" tab
5) Beside the entry which says "Target", at the end of the command
line there, append the text "/clean" (preceeded by a space). This will
allow ZoneAlarm to uninstall cleanly, removing all referrences to the
TrueVector Monitor and the TrueVector Monitor itself. They will be
removed even from the Registry.
6) Open ZoneAlarm and set its configuration to not start when Windows
starts
7) Make sure the Windows Firewall is turned on, then unload ZoneAlarm
using its icon in the Notification Area
8) Reboot your computer
9) Click on "Start|All programs|ZoneLabs|Uninstall ZoneAlarm"
10) Finish the uninstallation of ZoneAlarm and reboot.

To really be sure your system is free from ZoneAlarm, use the program
"JV16 Power Tools" to search for all instances in the Registry of
"ZoneLabs" or "ZoneAlarm" and remove them. If you have another
Registry Cleaning tool which will search for all instances of text
references in the Registry and remove them, use it instead.

If I am not mistaken, TrueVector is a service.
Try to set it to Disabled:

Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
In the left pane, click Services and Applications, and then click Services.
In the right pane, right-click TrueVector (or something similar) Service,
and then select Properties.
Select Disabled (Startup type dropdown)
Click OK
Restart

Hope this helps!

I did have ZoneAlarm at 1 time, but removed it using Add/Remove program
within Control Panel. I even re-installed ZoneAlarm, the message went
away, then I again removed using Add/Remove and once again the
TrueVector service error remains.

I'm seeking some backdoor removal, so I may just try the registry
cleaner. Hope that will help.

the problem is TrueVector is NOT listed as a service, and I've already
scoured the registry deleting entries for: vsdatant.sys, ZoneLab, and
ZoneAlarm, and still get the message.

Do you have the "Hide Protected Operating System Files" UNCHECKED in the
Tools>Folder Options ( under View "Show hidden files and folders")

The Zone Alarm was uninstalled with the preference changed to NOT 'load at
startup' and computer rebooted before uninstalling??

These instructions below are from a Zone Alarm forum responder (Hoov)
..........
After Uninstalling....
Click on Start, then Search or Find, and select Files.
Make sure that the location box is set to search your local hard drive
(usually C:) or "All Local Drives".

Type the following exactly as shown and delete any folders found.

zonelabs
"zone labs"
"Internet logs"

Type the following exactly as shown (including .* where appropriate) and
delete any files found in C:\Windows or any of it's subfolders. Don't forget
the C:\Temp or C:\Windows\Temp folder.

vsconfig.xml
vsdata.dll
vsdata95.vxd
vsdatant.sys
vsmon.*
vsmonapi.dll
vsnetutils.dll
vspubapi.dll
zaplus.*
zapro.*
zlparser.dll
zonealarm.exe
zoneband.dll

vsutil.dll - Important. Right click and select Properties > Version to be
sure this is a ZA file. Do NOT delete this file unless it is a Zone Labs
file!

Type the following exactly as shown and delete any files found in any folder
with the word "Programs" in the path.

zapro
zonealarm
"zonealarm pro"

Empty your recycle bin.

Restart your computer.

If you received an error message on deleting the files, or if the original
programmes remain in the Programs list, restarting your computer in Safe
Mode will allow you to delete the files properly.

You may need to delete the vsdatant kernel driver as well. Use the SC.EXE
command-line to delete a driver/service from the registry so that it won't
load again.

Alternately, to remove a service from the Registry, read below:

The Service and driver entries are present under this registry key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services]

Each sub-key represents a driver or a Service. To modify/delete a 3rd party
service, click Start, Run and type REGEDIT to open the Registry Editor and
navigate to the above location. You should be able to identify them easily by
reading the "DisplayName" and "ImagePath" fields in the right-pane in the
Registry Editor.

Note: Before modifying / removing a Service, create a System Restore point
or a complete Registry backup, just in case something happens.
