AFD Networking Support Environment stopped running...

How do I get AFD running again? When uninstalling and trying to re-download
ZoneAlarm, my system shutdown (Windows XP). Then I got a ZA error message
saying it could not install because one of it's components (TrueVector) was
not operating.

Following HELP instructions, I checked it out under SERVICES, and found that
TrueVector is dependent on AFD/NTServicePack component (afd.sys and
msafd.dll) which is now missing from the SERVICES list.

A search found the following:
afd.sys in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers
msafd.dll in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers
afd.sys in C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386
msafd.dll in C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386
afd.sys in C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$
msafd.dll in C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$

Hi, I ran Belarc and nothing failed or needs to be fixed. Under Missing
Microsoft Security Hotfixes it says "no details available." Under Installed
Hotfixes, I have a handful of "Unmarked HotFixes that lack the data to allow
verification." All the rest verified, none failed. Not sure what to do from
here...Thanks.

Hi Kristine,

Next is to use your Windows XP CD? Do you have one? If you do, do the
following:
Go click Start to Run and type in Cmd and click OK. Insert your XP CD in the
CD-RW Drive or DVD Drive.
Type in the DOS Box, sfc /scannow and hit Enter.

Purpose: To replace missing files of XP's operating system.

Hi C, XP scan didn't find anything. When I searched the hard drive the AFD
components seem to be in place but not running according to the Services
list.

Hi Kristine,

This procedure usually fixes a problem uninstalling and reinstalling a
program.

If the program, doesn't uninstall, then download the program, but save
the program to your Desktop Briefcase folder. Once downloaded go into the
Briefcase and click on it to install it, if you can't uninstall it. This
procedure will replace missing files.

Reboot the computer. Now go back into Add or remove Programs and uninstall
the program just installed. It should uninstall completely this time. Reboot
the computer.

Go to http://www.tune-up.com/ and download the trial version of TuneUp
Utilities 2006, the same as the Full version, but with a 30-day Window of
use. Install it. Now before using the program, go into Explore and clean out
your \Temp folder in your User ID and remove all files and sub-folders of
C:\Windows\Temp. Go into Program Files and remove the program folders of the
program just uninstalled. Empty the Recycle Bin.

Now use the TuneUp Utilities 2006 TuneUp Registry Cleaner. Run it until
zero errors. All changes are backed up.
Then reboot the computer. Now reinstall the program you had uninstalled.
This should make the computer work better now.

Is it dangerous to unistall XP Service Pack 2 (which AFD is part of)? When I
tried, I got a very long list of programs that may not run if it is removed,
including my DSL. I also tried to download XP SP2 to my Briefcase, but
Windows won't let me because I already have it installed.

Hi Kristine,

If you decide to uninstall XP Service Pack 2, you might as well decide
to wipe the partition that XP is installed in and reformat and reinstall
Windows XP. However you are only mentioning Windows XP. You have not
disclosed which version of XP, you are running? 32-Bit, 64-Bit, Windows XP
Media Center Edition, XP Home Edition or XP Professional Edition?

Download the Service of XP from here? If reformatting, save it to a
different partition.

Hi Kristine J,

I don't have any idea of how your computer's Hard Drive is partitioned
into one than one partition or you have a second Hard Drive, but if you
follow these instructions following, it will reinstall Windows XP Home
Edition, provided you have a Windows XP Home Edition CD. But you will need
to leave the DSL connected to the computer, while you are reinstalling XP
HE.

Procedure to Reinstall Windows XP!

If you want to save any files, make a backup of those files off the Hard
Drive and proceed.

0. - Turn off the printer.
1. - Go into Computer Bios and Set Defaults and Exit, if you know how.
Make sure the Boot Order is set to Boot to CD-Rom Drive First.
2. - Insert Windows XP CD into CD-Rom Drive.
3. - Reboot the computer.
4. - Welcome to Setup.
5. - Reinstall XP - Press Enter
6. - F8 - I Agree
7. - Esc: Don't Repair
8. - Select Partition to Install Windows XP on.
Use UP and DOWN ARROW Keys to Highlight Partition.
9. - Press Enter.
10. - Press C to Continue.
11. - Highlight the Action You Want To Take.
Type of Format you want to perform.
12. - I selected Format The Partition using the Fat File System.
13. - Then Press Enter to Continue
14. - Warning Message
15. - Press F
16. - To Continue To Format Partition with the FAT32 File System.
17. - Press Enter.
18. - Now it formats.
19. - After Formatting It Checks The Drive.
20. - Then Copies files to partition.
21. - Now it Reboots to Windows XP. Don't press a key to boot to CD.
22. - And now it installs Windows XP.
23. - You need to be here now.
24. - Starts at 39 Minutes to Complete.
25. - At 33 minutes, you need to set Time and Time Zone.
26. - And Enter The Product Key.
27. - At 29 minutes, you need to pick the Network.
28. - Now wait for Reboot and you are done.

The instructions above, I wrote as I performed them. You don't need to
format with FAT32, you can format with NTFS format. However, I would advise
against doing a Quick Reformat, do a Regular Reformat.
