Removing SP2

Right, it broke before hand, because i was playing it
less then an hour before i got the update prompt, why it
was so broke that it ran beautifully and with no lag, and
afterwards it must've been working because it wouldn't
even start.

....I know when a program works, and doesn't, and since
the service pack was the only thing installed that entire
week (much less the less then 2 hour period that it broke
in), it obviously wasn't broken before. I appreciate the
replies, but telling me it was broke before the pack is
nonsense, i was running my games just fine, and then it
stopped working, and the only thing in between was the
update (and unless microsoft released 10 other new
updates with it, the service pack was it, because i
manually check for updates every sunday...anyways, i just
want it gone

That's like getting rid of your new, 2004 Chevy cos the wheels from your '49

Check your system for "hijackware":

CoolWebSearch Chronicles

Run these tools in the following order with nothing else running in
background:

1. CWShredder (fix all found)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all found)

3. Spybot (RTFM but generally fix everything in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe) is the preferred
tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools may be found at
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

Also:

1. Download and run Stinger (http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/); then...

2. Update your virus definitions, enable Show Hidden Files
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2002092715262339)
and then run a full system scan in Safe Mode
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406)
with nothing else running in background. Note the files identified and
removed then find the corresponding page for the file at your AV maker's
online support pages (e.g.,
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.winfavorites.html)
and follow all Removal steps.

WinXP Only (WinME similar): If this scan finds anything, create a new
Restore Point then Disk Cleanup > More options > Delete all but the most
recent Restore Point.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

Naw I feel more like I bought new wheels for my car, and
when I installed the car fell to pieces, but the wheels
were fine! All has been (possibly temporarily) fixed, I
restored my system to wednesday morning when all else
failed, scan disk, norton scan (updated weekly), spybot
(updated sunday), adaware (updated today), ran all of
these, adaware was the only one that found anything,
a "possible hijack attempt". Everything runs fine now
that I did the restore, but I am keeping your list of "to
read" for this weekend. I'd like to have SP2, but not if
it's going to break functionality of anything I currently
have (I just tested stuff that was lagging/broken, it's
all fine now, system restore did it).

This shouldn't have been released if it could do so much
damage (and it can't just be me, there are dozens of
websites listing program conflicts and programs that will
simply not work after the pack...)

Once I have more time I will try this again, after doing
ALL of the related reading, my "update" shouldn't break
anything, and if it were broken before hand it wouldn't
work now (restore was for the morning of the day that I
updated, anything that was installed had been so since
sunday, the last time i had to update computer stuffs).
And if it were broken, but still worked, well, then it
isn't broken...but regardless, this is obviously not an
update that should be done lightly...

Whether you believe it or not, pre-existing issues, (known or unknown)
are a common cause of Service Pack installation issues.
The fact a computer seems to be functioning perfectly is no guarantee
that it is functioning perfectly.

Windows XP SP2 Misconception

<quote>
I have followed a number of news stories recently about so-called
"incompatibilities" with Microsoft's Service Pack 2 for Windows XP. Because
SP2 enables the Windows Firewall by default, it is blocking internet
connections by a number of programs. Unbelievably, people are reporting this
as a "glitch" in the service patch.

These people need to get a clue. These are not bugs, glitches or
incompatibilities. The service patch is doing exactly what it is supposed to
do. It turns on the new Windows firewall, which blocks connections in and
out until you tell it to do differently. That is what a firewall does. This
is not unique to SP2. All software firewalls - ALL OF THEM - do exactly the
same thing.

When XP's Service Pack 2 comes out, don't let these foolish news articles
about "incompatibilities" keep you from installing it. There may be real
glitches found later on. The stories that are out right now are full of
nonsense, written by the uninformed. You will be much safer from drive-by
malware infection after you install this service pack.
