Removing program and components

My problem is that once I deleted a program using the "add/remove program", I
was left with the short cut files when I click on start then go to all
programs.

An example would be AOL . Once I deleted the program, I still have a folder
under programs that I can click on but my computer won't find it and tries to
browse for it.

Does anyone know how to do fix this and how to sort out those files?
I used to do it on my old computer using windows 2000 easily but can't find
how to do this on this computer using windows xp.

Thanks.
