Please tell me how to remove information about a plug-play
device from my list of devices.

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you mean to do. Is the device no
longer attached to the PC?

I have the same sort of question. was installing windows updates for a
friend and pluged in my ehternet adapter to do it as they have a dialup
modem. after the updates removed my adapter. It is still in device manger
and nothing I do will make it go away. everytime XP loads it "finds" it...How
do I make device manager realize the adapter is GONE.

btw..running XP with all but SP2

Reboot, enter BIOS setup. Look for anything like "reset (PCI or PnP) configuration information".
Select that, power down and reboot again.
