USB plug and play not working

My plug and play USB stick, USB harddrive or USB printer is not recognized by
Windows XP.

I have installed the latest updates for Windows XP SP2.
I have disabled the antivirus.
I have checked the Plug and Play service, it is running.

I have removed the USB controllers under Device Manager, rebooted and forced
the detection and reinstallation - no problem, that part works fine!

I have even started the Device Manager after
SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
SET DEVMGR_SHOW_DETAILS=1
and than choose "show hidden devices" so I could clean up the leftovers of
old USB devices.

However, when I plug in an USB device, the PnP auto detection does not
start, and on my USB stick the LED does not light up.

Does anyone have any idea ???

Or is my USB controller defect even if it does show up under Device Manager ?

I would appriciate any help!
