Removing password requirement

W

wulfit

I had a wireless connection working between two laptops, one running Vista
and the other XP. I had to reload the XP laptop from scratch and when I
reconnected the network, I started getting a message on the Vista laptop
that a password is required to get into the XP laptop (I don't get the same
message running in the opposite direction).

The username and password for the XP laptop doesn't work when I enter them,
so I don't know what the system is looking for. I'd rather disable the
requirement for a password, and XP Help says that to do this, I should go
into Network Connections, then Incoming Connections. When I open Network
Connections, is there meant to be a link reading Incoming Connections
somewhere in the window? If not, where do I find it?

I assume this is XP Pro and not XP Home. Check to see that Simple
File Sharing is enabled. Under Simple File Sharing, all network
connections are made with the Guest account and unless there is a
password on the Guest account or the Guest Account is disabled, this
should work.

Double-click on any folder to open explorer window, then
Tools -> Folder Options -> View [Tab]
At the bottom is an enable checkbox for Simple File Sharing.

Thanks for your advice - the problem was indeed not one to do with passwords
but with sharing, which I've enabled. The connection now works perfectly.
I also discovered that I don't need to be able to share in both directions -
if one is working it is possible to copy files both ways. Fantastic!!

If you look at the other reply to my message in this thread, you'll see a
suggestion about enabling file sharing. This turned out to be the problem
for me rather than passwords, and once I corrected it I got the connection
working perfectly.

Hi
It depends on what you call both ways. If you mean that one computer can get
files and sent files too, yeah it would work if only the other computer
sharing is On.
However, if you want to do the same from the other computer to the first
computer, then both computers need to have the Sharing configured On.
As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what it is
allowed to be shared.
