I have a 40gig hard drive that I have been unable to use because it has a 8
gig partition that I can't remove, and only the 8 gigs are viewable and
useable. I would like to remove this partition so the whole drive is
useable. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can do this?
Thanks

The simplest and least expensive way is to boot the machine using a WIN98SE
bootable floppy (www.bootdisk.com), run fdisk and remove the partition (you
will lose all data but I assume from your post the drive has no data you
need). Then format. You will now have a clean drive.

Thanks Edward, after I posted my problem and did a lot of reading, I was able
to find a solution by doing the following:
Click start, right clicked on my computer and select manage, storage, disk
manager, highlighted the drive I was having the problem with, right clicked
and followed the prompts to partition and format the drive. I failed to
mention in my original post that I had taken the drive and put it in a case
to use as an external usb drive for storage and backup. I didn't want to go
through the hassle of mounting the drive inside my computer and disabling my
C drive in order to repartition the drive. I had tried to do this several
times over the past year to get rid of the 8 gig partition. I had even tried
using the Windows 98SE bootable floppy and running fdisk....as you suggested
in your post. I didn't realize that a drive (even an external drive) could
be reformatted using the disk manager feature in Windows XP. I had written
SeaGate about my problem and while at their website (www.seagate.com) started
reading their troubleshooting section and found there was an easier way to
get rid of the 8 gig partition which they had posted on their site.
I appreciate your quick response....thanks so much for your trouble.

Jumper and connect the drive as master in the PC. Disconnect all other
internal or external HD's, Zip drives, etc and use the XP CD to delete the
unwanted partitions. Do not install XP. Re-jumper and connect the HD's as
you wish and then use disk manager to use the unpartitioned space as you
wish.
