Removing Outlook Express

Oh boy!

I have a problem. I have discovered how hard it apparently is to
remove Outlook Express in XP.

My son in Calif has messed up his OE so bad I figure the best thing
for him to do is uninstall the thing and then reinstall. Imagine my
dismay to discover how involved that is.

So - can anyone tell me a simple (I emphasize simple) way that he do
what I think he should do?

There is a program to do this I think I see (Google), but you gotta
pay for the dang thing. Is that my only choice?

I believe it can be done from the Control Panel. Click on the Start button,
then select Control Panel. When the Control Panel comes up, select Add or
Remove Programs. When the next Window opens on the left side is a block
marked "Add or Remove Windows Components". Select this and scroll down until
you see "Outlook Express" and check that box. Make sure that no other boxes
are checked and you will need your WinXP installation disk. Click Next and
follow instructions. (Note: this should work, but I didn't go all the way to
try it as I don't want to remove OE from my computer!)

You are not able to uninstall or remove Outlook Express. It is an integral part of
Internet Explorer and Windows XP. All you can do is to remove the access to it by
removing the Icon on your desktop. You can of course try the following

It may be faster simply to reinstal Firefox (free from www.mozilla.com.)
WinXP Update will require OE (i.e. will not respond correctly to
Firefox) but he can repair or reinstal this later.

No, it can't be done from the Control Panel.

The option in Add/Remove/Windows Components is exactly what it says,
i.e. "Adds or removes access to Outlook Express from the Start menu".
It does not remove OE.

Best/easiest thing to do is download and install a
new IE6 (or IE7 if you want tabbed browsing and
other things it offers). They're both available
from the Microsoft site. That way everything gets
reloaded and reinstalled.

You can't remove OE: It's part of IE which in
turn is part of XP; an integral part. Any program
that claims to fully "remove" OE is lying and it
cannot be done, from everything I've read. It CAN
be made invisible so it'll seem to not be there,
but the needed parts obviously will still be there
or the machine wouldn't boot properly. I've no
actual experience with that but I've read it
enough from reputable resources (non MS) to
believe it's the case.

Get IE6 or 7 right from MS; don't trust a site
that could have bastardized it and done who knows
what to it or you could end up with even more
problems.

OR, if you have your original XP CD, you could use
Control Panel's add/remove, add/remove windows
COMPONENTS to do essentially the same thing.
