Removing McAfee AV

H

Heather

Hi All......

I have a friend in Costa Rica who bought a Dell laptop in the US a month ago
and it came with McAfee antivirus on it. She had previously used EZ Trust
on her desktop and would like to download and use that one.

What all is involved in removing McAfee from this new laptop? From what she
says, she has not touched it. I am not entirely sure if it is opened up or
not. I would assume it has been activated by Dell.

She is NOT all that computer literate, but a fast learner. And I simply
have no idea what all is involved here. Her ISP told her that it was one
SOB to remove.

Quote......
**The server technician confirmed that McAfee is a pain in the neck but
would not help me to disable it, even though he agreed it should be done.
He cannot take the responsibility**........
Unquote........

I remember when my brother-in-law bought a computer from Dell with McAfee on
it and he said he couldn't download EZ Trust or ZAPro because of it, but as
he fibs a lot, I didn't believe him. He likes to pretend he knows a lot
about computers.....HAH!! But that is another story.

So any replies will be forwarded on to Ann......I know there are a few on
here that are very knowledgeable about McAfee.

Thanks......Heather

As David says that is the best site however as I haunt there will save you a
visit

Heather if it is Vs9 which being a new Pc I would assume so, the steps are
shown in this link
http://tools.mcafeehelp.com/doc.php?siteid=60&docid=340337&support=ts

This is applicable for VS8 as well.

If she has an older version this link will lead you to the docs choose tech
support and DELL sites

http://tools.mcafeehelp.com/index.php

The manual removal might be a tad daunting

good luck Peace

Funnily enough I added removal utility for older versions of McAfee
Virusscan to my website in the 'Got a virus?' section. I thought they
would be useful if part of the virus payload corrupted these files.

As an alternative if its a new Laptop can you re-rormat, reinstall
windows then you have a will definately McAfee free disk and can put
what you like in?

Or is it not possible because you only have a Dell supplied recovery
disk not the full Windows CD?

Thank you so much......I will forward this to her. It is a brand new laptop
that she purchased in Arizona...not sure which model.

I warned her not to use McAfee and all she wants to do is get the damned
thing off, grin. She is not as computer literate as some.....but definitely
follows instructions very well.

*daunting*?? Aha.....an Aussie. Thanks, mate.

Both the above statements are very true.

However, if there's no Uninstall option at McAfee's entry in
Start-Programs, there may be one at Start-Settings-
ControlPanel-Add/RemovePrograms

And if that doesn't work, deleting all the McAfee or Network
Associates folders and the McAfee or Network Associates hives
in the registry plus the entries that point at McAfee files in
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run is fairly
effective.

The manual removal might be a tad daunting
------------------------------------------

I have the laptop beside me (writing this on PC) and the McAfee
program consists of McAfee Virus Scan, McAfee Personal Firewall Plus
and McAfee Security Centre.

And Peace is right. The Manual Uninstall of VirusScan does look
daunting to me. I've never done anything like this. Never have I
backed up a Registry but he shows instructions, so I suppose I can get
over that hurdle. However, I am scared stiff about removing McAfee to
tell you the truth.

Peace first describes how to uninstall VirusScan. I will go into
Contral Panel and take a look. I wonder how I get rid of the Personal
Firewall? Same way?

Incidentally I did go into the McAfee Program to determine what
product version I have. I could not find a number only VSO (several)
without number. Expect this is a minor detail.
------------------------------

I asked Ann to check for version # under Help, etc. But I am sure she must
have the latest version. She has no one to ask in Costa Rica and any sort
of help would be most appreciated. I have never used McAfee myself.

Will your instructions be different now that we see she has the Firewall &
Security Centre as well??

If I ever bought a Dell computer, I would personally strangle the person
who puts McAfee on them......grin!! I never thought to warn her. She can't
get tech help from the US btw......another little wrinkle. Bought in the
US, ergo tech support is in the US. Stupid company!!

Cheers....Heather
