Removing internet link raw image files

I'm told that when an internet link is opened, a rawxxx.jpg, or rawxxx.gif,
image file is stored on the HD. Searching for the files reveals nothing, but
I'm told there is software to remove these files, freeing drive space. Does
anyone know how to access and remove these files from the HD? Thanks in

I've never heard of this or ever found files like that on my Windows
machines or on clients' boxen. From your description, I would expect those
files to be in the Temporary Internet Files folder. You need to enable
viewing all hidden files to see them.

I think your information is dubious, but you can clean temporary files with
the free CCleaner. I don't suggest using the registry management tools in
the program, however.

Thanks. What I'm now told by an "IT" friend, is the files are ones that were
deleted, but remain on the HD, they are just removed from the file allocation
table. IF true, is there a way to remove them?

When something is "deleted" the space that the file occupies is "marked"
as "free space", to be used as necessary for other file storage. NOW
what is your question? Is it a case of you being worried about someone
"undeleting" the pictures and seeing what you were viewing? Only way to
do that is to "overwrite" the "free space" the files occupied. If that
is not your worry, but you were merely concerned about recovering "free
space" you have no worry.

That's the exact answer I am looking for. Doing some research, it appears I
want to run 'cipher /w:c:' ? Or is there any command qualifier I need to add?

Also, it is supposed to be part of XP, but a search did not find the file on
my pc. Can you provide the MS link I can download it from?

If you have installed SP2, you should have it.
New functionality is available for Cipher.exe in Windows 2000 and Windows XP

As to the use simplly look it up in the "Command line reference A-Z" in
"Windows help and support" or issue

CIPHER /?

at the command prompt.

Thanks again. I have SP2 on both my PC's, but a search does not find
cipher.exe. Can I download and use the file on the MS site for windows 2000?
Could not find one for XP.

thanks for you patience. I tried the link you gave, but I got "your request
could not be processed". I searched MS site for the xp hot fix, but could
not find anything. Quite painful as I'm only on dialup. I tried to email
for support, but because windows came installed on the PC, there is a $60
charge. Guess I give it up, eh?

The hotfix number is in the link I sent you, as for getting it, if you
call them and only ask for the hotfix, they don't charge you. And they
should then e-mail you a download link.

So while certainly a raw .jpeg could be from a digital camera, a raw .jpeg
is not automatically created every time one clicks on a web link. I think
Bob I has answered what the OP really wanted to know.

Well I don't know what I'm doing wrong. When I click the link you gave, I
get an error message that my request cannot be processed. I assume the

Thanks. Got the link from MS, the file downloaded, but when I tried to open
it I got an error that the self extracting file is part of a multi disk zip
file. Please insert the last disk of the set. Interesting since I loaded
the file on the hard drive. Will be contacting MS again.
