Acronis Teamed Up with Western Digital

J

John

I just found out a few minutes ago that we can get a free Acronis True Image
disk imaging software from Western Digital. Here's the link:
http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119&type=download&wdc_lang=en

I'm wondering if anyone here has used this particular Acronis TI software
with their XP/Vista. I have some questions for those who have tried it:

- Is there any limitations (eg: can only clone WD hard disks but not other
brands)?
- Does it work with external USB or Firewire HDs?
- Can we create a clone image (ie: create an image file) onto an external
HD?

Update:
I'm trying to download the software but keep getting the following:
HTTP Error: 502 (Bad Gateway)

Not sure if the problem is at my end of the connection or theirs. At one
point download starts but it stops prematurely at 528 KB.

It is downloading just fine here. Although I am using Orbit Downloader.
And this isn't unusual that Acronis True Image and a hard drive
manufacture teams up, it happens all of the time.

I haven't ran it yet, but what normally happens is that it checks for at
least one WD drive on the system either when you install or when it
runs. That is my guess anyway.

Thanks Bill.
It's gotta be my connection. I got about 20MB before download quits again.
It's a direct download from WDC.

I'm retrying. It's now at 35MB and still goes. I hope d/l finishes this
time.

Give us an update if you've tested it.

Failed to install on my netbook (EeePC 702) with the following error
message:

Cannot read from file, a possible reason might be you do not have
permission to perform this operation.

Running as administrator. I'll make a backup on this Gateway and then
try it there. As this does have a brand new WD in it. <grin>

You will need to use Firefox to download. Tried to download using IE7 but failed. The
file got corrupted. Download with firefox went smoothly and installed OK on my system
Not sure if I have WD HD on my laptop but it is DELL Inspiron 2600 (very old system by
current standards). Can't give any other feedback due to limitation of my hardware.

I downloaded it under IE6 using Orbit Downloader. Same error message on
my Gateway laptop. Redownloading under Firefox and we will see. At least
I got my backups done. <grin>

Download finally finished. tih_s_e.exe file size is 126,924,016 bytes.

I ran it. I got as far as preparing for installation... then setup quits
with the following message:

"To install the product, at least one Western Digital device should be
installed in your system.
You can purchase the full version of Acronis True Image Home edition by
visiting www.acronis.com"

My desktop HD is Samsung :p
Your first reply is correct, at least 1 WD HD must present. Looks like the
download is good.

Gotta wait till I come home to test it on my home PC (it does have WD HD).
I'd be happy if it lets me create a clone image file on my external USB HD
(Seagate).

I use IE7 and direct download from wdc. I finally got all of it. Looks like
a good download but I'll never know until I run it. Unfortunately I'll have
to wait till I get home later today.

Btw, I did try firefox earlier. It also stopped at 500KB.

It is 123,950 kb so it must be 126,924,016 bytes (123,950 x 1,024) rounded for
computer storage!

You can download the file with any tool you like - Firefox, IE, you name it.
I used wget.exe because my first attempt with Firefox failed at 45%, perhaps
because of the size of the file.

As mentioned by others, the tool runs only if at least one disk is a WD
disk. It does all the usual things, e.g.
- Create/restore an image
- Browse an image
- Create a clone of a disk or partition
- Create a rescue medium

Second download ran fine. Installed and it is Acronis True Image Home
2009 (v11). And the manual can be downloaded at:

Acronis True Image WD Edition Manual
http://www.wdc.com/WDProducts/Library/UM/ENG/acronisum.pdf

Which explains what you can and can't do with this version. Yes it
requires at least one WD drive connected.

The date and time was Monday, September 14, 2009 2:16:11 PM, and on a
whim, Pegasus [MVP] pounded out on the keyboard:

My guess is the server is overloaded. It took a while using FF, but it
completed fine here.

A few facts about the WD version of TrueImage!

1. It is an older version (ver 11, build 8,311). The current version is
TrueImage Home 2009.

2. Regardless, it does work with Windows 7. I just created/restored an
image to test same.

3. It is about 30-40% slower than TrueImage 2009 on restore (after reboot
to do so).

4. The reboot for restore went flawlessly.

5. It can not read/verify an image created using TrueImage Home 2009.
This is to be expected.

All in all, if you have a Western Digital hard drive installed in your
computer this offer is very nice.

I can't comment on the WDC specific utility, but to answer your questions
for the generally available TrueImage.

It does work with both external USB and Firewire hard drives.

Yes, you can produce an image onto an external hard drive. In fact this is
the ideal way to use it.

As to whether the WD version is crippled to unly work with WD drives, we
await reports.

TrueImage is a good backup solution for the average home user. It also
makes incremental and differential images which are automatically restored
if disaster strikes.

Thanks to all for your reply.

I tried it on my home PC last night. It installed just fine (I have WD HD).
I was able to run it and I tried to clone the whole internal WD hard drive
to an external USB hard drive (Seagate). My external USB HD is already NTFS
formatted and has some files stored in it.

Cloning won't continue unless I choose to "delete and recreate partition" on
the destination (external) HD. I don't want to lose data on that HD so I
stopped right there.

I've used older versions of Ghost. It's very easy to clone the whole HD,
partitions, etc. Acronis is a little different to me.

How exactly do I clone the entire HD onto an external USB HD? What I'd like
to do is to create a clone image of the whole internal HD (or just 1
partition -- for example: D volume) onto an external USB HD. The result
would be 1 gigantic (GB) image file on my USB HD.

Hi John! Cloning is used if you bought a new hard drive and what to
clone your old to the new and then replace the old drive with the new
drive. In this case, this isn't what you want.

What you want is to backup. This will leave all of your data on the
external drive alone. And it will only add more data files to the drive
(probably put them in its own folder). Which Acronis True Image can use
to restore everything back to the same state as the time it was backed
up.
