removing desktop shortcut

Since I have an Outlook shortcut in my quick launch tray,
I don't want the shortcut icon on my desktop, but when I
go to delete it, I get warned not to do so - it provides
some utility. What utility does the desktop shortcut
offer? What calamity will strike if I remove it?

You can right click on this icon and configure your mail settings.
