Removing Background.

I would like to be able to remove the background from a
picture so that, for instance, I am left with only the
object/person that I want to keep. Much the same as Icons
are shown on a Desktop.

I've tried looking through different editing software but
I'm new to this and I don't really know what I'm looking
for.

Can anyone help please?

This is not an easy project. You can do it with any photo imaging software with
patience and a steady hand. Corel has a program called "Knock Out". Very pricey but
it will do the job.

I do this with Photoshop (I'm quite sure the economical Photoshop Elements)
will also accomlish this task.

It can be a challenging task especially if you want to isolate a person with
hair.

You said it "given the right software and enough contrast between the
subject and the background.". Oftimes one doesn't have
enough control over the image capture process to assure there will be enough
contrast to use 'edge finder/magnetic lasso'. Every
image presents different challenges as such no one tool is preferred in
every situation.

Part of the difficulty is that different photos demand different
combinations of tools and (in Photoshop ... and Elements), I use the Magic
Wand, Lasso,
Marquee, Layer Masks and Extract.
