removed hardware continues to appear in device manager

How to I get XP to forget a DVD combo drive I have removed from the PC. I've even tried
unplugging the secondary IDE channel ribbon cable and rebooting a couple times but the
drive continues to appear in device manager.

"Generic DVD-ROM SCSI CDROM Device" under "DVD/CD-ROM drives" category

keeps reappearing in device manager no matter how many times I uninstall it and reboot.
The secondary IDE channel is uninstalled and it's ribbon cable pulled out. There are no
CD or DVD drives in the PC at all right now. I have never seen anything like this.

Maybe you should install the CDROM back first, then let the device shown
properly in the device manager, then delete the device in the device
manager. Afterwards, shutdown and unplug the CDROM, see if it works.

Are you by any chance loading a legacy device driver through some startup
file like an autoexecbat or sysconfig? That might make your system think
that one is attached. Did you upgrade to XP from some older system that
might have needed the driver?
