Lee,

In Windows 2000 it is called Group Policy Editor and to run it locally on a system you run Gpedit.msc. To set a local policy
to remove Search from the Start menu you would go to User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and
Taskbar and then enable the policy "Remove Search menu from Start Menu".

If you are in a Windows 2000 domain this can also be done through a Group Policy Object (GPO) in the Active Directory
(AD).

Bill,

This seems to remove search from various other places in the system as
well, like windows explorer. Is there a way of just removing the start
menu item, but retaining all other search functionality? I use search
a lot, but I never invoke it from the start menu, and so it's just
wasting space there.

The same applies to the Settings menu on the start menu. I can't find
a way of just removing the start menu item itself, but keeping the
control panel available in windows explorer.

Cheers,
Simon.

Simon,

Unfortunately I don't know of a way to do it other than the policy.
