Remove Program/Uninstall Quandry

I recently bought a new PC. I copied onto a flash drive six prior year
TurboTax programs and associated data files from my old PC and loaded them
onto the new PC. When I try to launch the old programs on the new system I
get a message saying "Configuration has been modified (prd.ini, startup).
Please reinstall." I assume the software is recognizing it's now in a new
physical environment. I contacted Intuit (publisher of TurboTax) and they
claim that if I load the old program CD's I can still add the updates via the
web. So Intuit is telling me to uninstall and reinstall the various TurboTax
programs. I tried launching the uninstall feature but nothing happens. If I
go into Add/Remove Programs and remove the programs am I going to create a
problem for myself? I don't understand the differences between removing a
program and uninstalling a program. Also, I don't really know if the
programs are actually installed on the new system. The various program files
are there but I'm not sure at what point there considered installed. I did
try to run the install feature on the TurboTax programs but again nothing
happened. I don't want to create confusion with the registry 'cause I see
all these dire warnings about what can happen if you mess up editing the
registry. I'm really not looking to go down that path. Can I safely use the
Remove Programs option?

Bill, if you simply copied six Turbo Tax programs and associated date files
from old PC you still have to configure Turbo Tax
for your new PC, which simply means Install the Turbo Tax Program. As long
as you have the backup flash drive I would
follow Intuit's instructions. Remove and Uninstalling in this context
means the same thing.
Go ahead and remove the Programs only if they are in Add/Remove Programs .
Then try to update and reinstall your Turbo
Tax Program.

When I go into Add/Remove Programs there is a list of programs generated by
the system. None of the old TurboTax programs appear in that list. Is there
some way I can add these programs to that list? Or are these programs really
not installed? Can I just delete the folder where I placed all these
TurboTax programs?

You cannot simply copy programs to another location, you can copy data, they
have to be installed.
Assuming you still have access to origonal data, using explorer locate the
copied programs, on the new PC and delete them.
Then install the programs from cd. Once done see program help or Inuit site
on how to restore the old data files
