remove IE6 xpsp2

i am having problems removing ie6 xpsp2 from windows xp
sp1. when i install prior version of internet browser
after uninstalling internet browser from windows
components i get an error 'setup has detected a newer
version of IE already installed on this system. setup
cannot continue.' do i need to remove it from the
registry?
