I deleted IE7 and I can't install IE6! PLEASE HELP!!

An internet provider told me that I have to downgrade my internet
explorer 7 to 6 because Windows XP works with 6. So I tried to
uninstall and delete ie7. When I went remove the program, all my other
programs, I was able to remove it except for IE7. So I manually
deleted it. Now I don't have it on my programs so I can't go online (I
have the page ie 6, but I cannot connect online) I then tried to
install Internet Explorer 6, but a pop up message that says, "Setup
has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed on
this system. Setup cannot continue. keeps popping up!
I'm getting so frusterated!
If I don't get help soon, I'm planning to just reformat my computer.
What am I to do??
Please help!

Your internet provider is nuts. Win XP works just fine with IE 7, and will
also work with IE8 when it's released. Hope you don't have to ask them
anything important.

Are you running WinXP SP2 or WinXP SP3, Jane?

Uh.. heehee.... I don't know much about computers.... :]
I have NO idea which SP I'm using.. *yikes

What exactly did you delete?  Have you rebooted since doing all this?

I went to start-run-%windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe
And yes, I did rebootted since then... several times..

What am I doing wrong here?..
*sigh..
I'm about ready to let my computer FLY~

I had to get a modem.
I am told that no name eh hem.. netzero worked the best. The internet
kept freezing on me. When I called them, they told me that it was
because XP was compatible with ie 6 so I had to downgrade.
When I use cable, it's fine~
Just when I use modem, I have a problem... and now I have a bigger
problem. I can't go online!!
GRRR..

To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. To avoid confusion, try not to
post your reply inline. Thank you.

To determine your WinXP version, right-click on My Computer & select
Properties; the version will be displayed on that tab.

Having determined whether you're running WinXP SP2 or WinXP SP3, see
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/05/05/ie-and-xpsp3.aspx: Does this
apply to you?

Repost:
Open Add/Remove Programs | open Add/Remove Windows Components: Is
"Internet
Explorer" checked here? If not, check it & reboot (again).

Please answer the above question.
