Remove icon/ link in Notification area "always hide/ show"

When I right click on the Notification tray, select Properties and then
select Customize, a list of all the program icons that were/ are displayed in
the System tray/ notification area appears. Some of the programs there have
been deleted but yet, their icon still appears. How can I permanently remove
the icon from the list? I tried hitting the "Restore Defaults" button but
that seems to reset whether you want an icon displayed or not; it does NOT
remove the old icon. I have also done a search for the icon on my
computer...nothing.
