Remove display of -ON or -OFF from dialog options

XP Pro SP3

Somehow I managed to turn on a feature that causes "-ON" or "-OFF" to be
displayed at the end of the line of each of the options in various Windows
dialogs.

For example, I see it in the Customize Start Menu | Advanced tab, and on the
Folder Options | View Tab. But it's only in those options that are displayed
within a treeview.

Any idea how to turn this feature back off so the dialogs look normal again?

You might try this: Click the "Reset All Folders" button in Folder
Options.

You might have changed a switch in the Registry too. Try System Restore
to a day just before the change first occurred.

Thanks for the response.

"Reset All Folders" doesn't make any difference because it isn't a folder
issue. It's likely some registry tweak that I applied (maybe inadvertently,
maybe on purpose, I don't recall) at some point. And since I don't recall
how long it's been that I've had the issue, the System Restore option isn't
viable either.

I've never heard of or seen this problem before, are you sure that this
isn't a result of a virus/malware infection?

I figured it out!

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Accessibility\Blind Access]
"On"="1"

Change "On" value to "0" to turn off. (It takes a logoff/logon (or restart)
to take effect.)

I think this registry setting may have gotten toggled some time ago when I
was playing with screen-reading software. Apparently that registry setting
causes Windows to add the "-ON" or "-OFF" text to the end of the text on
option settings inside a SysTreeView32 control so that screen reading
software can tell a blind user whether the setting is on or off. I don't
recall specifically asking for this feature to be activated, but apparently
something I did triggered it.

I found it by comparing a regedit dump of my HKCU tree with a dump of
another user account that didn't exhibit the issue.

Tim..... I have never seen the feature you describe (of an appended "ON" or
"OFF" text in such a "Tree View" control)... any chance you could post a
screen shot of the effect on an image sharing site like Twitpic?

I have taken note of your "cure" for future reference, thanks.

That's perfect! Thanks.

It means I don't have to change / restart / logoff/on to see the effect you
were talking about.

But I do know how to show someone how you remove the effect, thanks to
yourself, as someone who isn't blind could find it quite annoying.

Thanks again for that...
