'Run' dialog box command line

hello,

my question is regarding the command line in the Run dialog box accessed
from the windows start menu. i often use this dialog to browse to web pages
when i dont already have internet explorer open. after awhile, i noticed
previously viewed urls come up, after ive typed 'www.' in this Run dialog. i
have begun to find this annoying.

what i want to do, is first, clear the memory or storage place of which
these urls are kept, and then turn off this 'auto-complete' feature. i know
how to turn off the auto-complete feature, but i cannot figure out how to
clear this 'history' of urls from my computer. ive searched online as well as
the microsoft knowledge base, for a solution to this, and have come up with
nothing. ive also cleared internet explorers history deleted temporary
internet files, added policy lines in the registry editor, and tried using
the 'personal information' area of the content tab of the internet options
applet of the control panel. none of these seem to help.

i realize i could just uncheck the auto complete box from the auto complete
dialog on the content tab, but i first want to clear the history of urls ive
visited, so, if i dont uncheck auto complete, and type a web address, no
previous address will come up.

thank you
john

Start Menu > Run.

Type REGEDIT and click OK.

Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs

Right-click TypedURLs and choose "Delete"

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU
is recreated as soon as you type something legitimate into the Run box and
click OK.

You can also use the Clear button. The Clear button also deletes RunMRU
from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer.

TweakUI has a setting for Clear document history on exit and will do that at
logoff or reboot. More about TweakUI below.

Besides the Run MRU (Most Recently Used) list, this also clears...

IE History, AutoComplete, Clear the TIF, Clear the Run MRU, Typed
URL's and Clear List:

XP Start Menu:
You have to switch to Classic long enough to get the Clear button.
Right click the Start button | Properties | Select Classic Start Menu |
Customize button | Clear button | Click OK | Select Start menu | Click Apply
|Click OK

Classic Start Menu:
Right click the Start button | Properties | Customize button | Clear button

Clear button
[[Removes the list of recently accessed documents, programs, and Web sites
from the Documents menu.]]

The XP Start Menu Clear List button does not clear the Run MRU. The Classic
Start Menu Clear button will clear everything in the Run MRU.
-----

TweakUI
[+] Explorer

Clear document history on exit
[[This check box will control whether Explorer will clear the recent
documents history, run dialog history and typed-URL history when
you log off]]

Value Name: ClearRecentDocsOnExit
Value Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = No don't clear
1 = Yes clear them

If XP Pro you can use Group Edit...
Start | Run | Type: gpedit.msc | Click OK |
Navigate to >>>
User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar\

Clear history of recently opened documents on exit

[[If you enable this setting, the system deletes shortcuts to recently used
document files when the user logs off. As a result, the Documents menu on
the Start menu is always empty when the user logs on.
If you disable or do not configure this setting, the system retains document
shortcuts, and when a user logs on the Documents menu appears just as it did
when the user logged off.
Note: The system saves document shortcuts in the user profile in the
System-drive\Documents and Settings\User-name\Recent folder. ]]

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
Explorer

The registry entries are DWORD values. A value of 1 is enabled, and a value
of 0 is disabled.

Policy: Clear history of recent documents on exit
Description: Deletes all shortcuts shown in the Recent Documents menu when
the user logs off.
Registry Value: ClearRecentDocsOnExit

hey wes,

i had done all you suggested, as well as what mike meyer said before you.
but the whole time untl now, i hadnt restarted my computer. well, i just
restarted my computer, and when i bring up the run dialog box from the start
menu, and start typing a url, it still brings up previously visited sites.
ive already cleared everything, including internet explorer histories and
temporary files, and ive done all that was recommended here, and nothing is
changed. i havent turned auto-complete off yet, but id rather not. am i
forgetting something?

thanks

John,

See sections "Completely Deleting the Temporary Internet Files and index.dat (manual method)" and "To delete the History folder and index.dat (XP)" in this article.

<Q>
To prevent the web addresses from being displayed in RUN box, open Internet Options from Control Panel. Select the Content tab, and click the Auto Complete button. Under section Use AutoComplete for, uncheck Web addresses. Note that un-checking this option also disables the CTRL + ENTER functionality in Internet Explorer Address bar.
