removable rack ide drive with 2000 professional

I havea winnt 2000 Pro operating system on my removalble
ide rack drive. I use it at college as a c:drive and
slide it in at home to work (in theory.. ) My home pc
recognizes the E drive as it has designated the rack drive
but I can not boot from the 2000 pro drive.

It keeps boot from the XP operating system I have on the
main PC.

I changed the boot.ini file to inclued the winnt drive and
it comes up with the prompt to select one of them but it
will not allow me to choose the winnt op system. It says
it has a hardware configuration error.

I am not a PC guy. I do software ON A PC.. I am about to
throw the thing out a NON-MICROSOFT WINDOW!

Hello,

The scenario you describe won't work.

In your college computer, Win 2K was installed on the C: drive.
In your home computer, Win 2K is located on the E: drive.
All your Win 2K registry values point to entries on C: drive, entries that
Win 2K and your installed software can't find anymore. So even if you were
able to boot up the operating system, your software won't work.

As well, unless your home and college computers are very, very, very (did I
mention very already?) similar hardware wise, core system devices are also
different. This is why PC tech support can't easily remove the hard drive
from a defective computer and put it in a different model computer and be up
and running.

regards,

SteveC
