remote registry service missing

[Rich]

Have W2K server running Exchange 5.5 Recently noticed
error messages that trace back to the fact that Remote
Registry is not running. When I checked that, I found
that it is not even a listed service!
How can I reinstall Remote Registry in order to start it?

I have copied the text file into WordPad, eliminated line
feeds (\) where they existed in the original, renamed the
file "RemoteRegistry.reg" and attempted to import it into
the registry, but the editor doesn't recognize it as a
registry key. Could you give me a short tutorial on what
I am missing?

If you can continue this thread a bit longer...
I have successfully incorporated the key you sent and
when I try to start the service (after reboot, of course)
I receive an "Error 2: Cannot find the file specified"
message. Are there files I need to restore, perhaps from
the CD, or service pack?

BTW: I am very much in your debt for the exceptionally
valuable service you provide, and the clear succinct
answers you give.

I have copied the text file into WordPad, eliminated line
feeds (\) where they existed in the original, renamed the
file "RemoteRegistry.reg" and attempted to import it into
the registry, but the editor doesn't recognize it as a
registry key. Could you give me a short tutorial on what
I am missing?

If you can continue this thread a bit longer...
I have successfully incorporated the key you sent and
when I try to start the service (after reboot, of course)
I receive an "Error 2: Cannot find the file specified"
message. Are there files I need to restore, perhaps from
the CD, or service pack?

BTW: I am very much in your debt for the exceptionally
valuable service you provide, and the clear succinct
answers you give.

Make sure that the Reg_Expand_Sz string
"ImagePath"=%SystemRoot%\system32\regsvc.exe
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\RemoteRegistryService
is correct and that this file does exist.
(If you need to edit the string you must use regedt32.exe to do so else the
Reg_Expand_Sz may be converted to a Reg_Sz string)

If the file is missing, then running sfc /scannow (WFP) should immediately
replace it from the dllcache folder as it's a protected operating system
file.
