Remote (internet) access utlities

Dr. Dos

Any one know if there are newsgroups that deal with remote
access utilities (not just a brand name)? I am referring to
software such as TightVNC Remotenet, Remote Desktop
Control. Laplink, PC Anywhere, etc I am trying to determine
whether web access vs direct via ip address with software
installed on host and master is "better" and whether one
needs a master in IT to configure the routers and firewalls.
Thanks for the info.

Dr Dos,

I use remote software daily

On sites like www.realvnc.com... you can see which ports to open. Just log
in to your router & allow those ports via rules. same ports for the firewall

With rdp. I fould this ok across a network but across the Internet is more
of a problem because the firewall stops it... If you disable your firewall
then it usually goes through because it's simpler to do that then create rdp
rules. Again, Microsoft have a KBase article that shows you which ports to
open...

PC Anywhere is just an expensive piece of unneeded software these days

Logmein123 is another alternative but you have to be careful as some virus
scanners pick it up
