remote desktop

I have been using remote desktop for 6 months now from an xp pro to an
xp pro. working fine. Today I am experincing problems. about every 4-5
mins the screen freezes, what every I am doing is still there, and
then it fades to gray like its going to disconnect, and returns back
to normal. I run a LAN and I am connecting through a WAN to get to the
machine. all other data from LAN across WAN is fine. Ping time from
LAN to current DNS server is coming back all replies. The LAN has an
external mail server and web server, site and mail are fine. Could
there be another issue at hand other than Web congestion? could the
NIC card be dropping packets? could the router doing port forwarding
be causing problems? is there some where specific to look to
troublshoot this? any help would be greatful

It becomes gray because of the drop in the network connection. There is new
feature introduced since SP1 called "Auto Reconnect", what this does is if
you have occassinal drops in network due to any reason and if it is within a
timeout it connects you back to that session without you having to enter the
credentials all over again. During the reconnection time, the session is
grayed out.

The reason is either your NIC card dropping packets or someother network
problem. Try updating the drivers of your networking gear or talk to the
vendors.
