I have two XP machines. One for work that is on my work domain and one for
home. When at home I would like to use remote desktop to access my home
machine. I was able to do this in the past but not currently. We are
connect through a Linksys router. I have turned on remote access on the home
machine and ping the IP address of the home machine from the work machine. I
can not ping the name of the home machine.

Any help would be great!

You need to provide much more information, e.g.
- Which OS does the home PC run, XP Home or Professional?
- Does the home PC have a fixed internal IP address?
- Does your home installation have a fixed external IP address?
- Did you create a tunnel for port 3389 in your LinkSys router?
- What firewall do you run on the home PC?
- What's changed since it last worked?

Both Machines are running XP Pro. The Router is running DHCP and both
machines are excepting DHCP. Theonly firewall on either machine is XP's
native firewall. I am not forwading a port as I did not believe I needed to
as both machines are inside the network? The only things that I can think of
that have changs is that i put my vonage router in the dmz of the linksys and
set the Qos for the vonage router on the linksys router and I add a secodn
video card to run a second monitor on the home machine.

Give me questions if you got them!

The statement in your initial post "When at home I would
like to use remote desktop to access my home machine"
appears to contradict your latest post. In it you say that
both the home and the work machine are, in fact, at your
home, inside the same network . . .

Run the following commands from a Command Prompt
on the home PC:
ping HomePC
telnet HomePC 3398

What response do you get?

Yes they are. They are in different parts of the house and house different
applications. Would be nice to access the home machine on the work machine.
(I work from home.)

Thanks!

Ping homepc gave four good replies. Telnet failed to connect on port 23.

Thanks.
(Sorry for all the posting confusion)

oops..telent failed port 3398

So I enabled my second nic and ste Remote Desktop on it and now I can ping
homepc from homepc and telnet home pc from homepc on pc 3398

I can NOT ping homepc from workpc by name but can by IP. Can NOT telnet
homepc from workpc on port 3398

?

This post gets curiouser and curiouser. First you don't
tell us that your always working INSIDE your own network
and then you don't tell us that you have multiple network
adapters. Perhaps you make a full disclosure and explain
your network exact setup. You should also post the output
from this command when you run it on each PC:

ipconfig /all

From the TOP!

I have a laptop provided by my employer that is registered on the work
domain. We will call this WorkPC. It has a nic and wireless nic. It is
connected to my Linksys router in my house via an ethernet cable when I work
from home. On that router exist a Vonage router that is in the DMZ and Qos.
I also have a Home computer we will call HomePC that has two nics and one
wireless nic. Currently it is connected to the same wireless router through
each nic vie ethernet cable.

I will gladdly post the out put of the command prompt if you can remind me
how to do so.

- Click start / run / cmd {OK}
- Type these commands:
ipconfig /all > c:\test.txt
notepad c:\test.txt
- Post the contents of c:\test.exe from both PCs.

Why do you have two NICs on your home PC?

That's three things I requested. You replied with
just one of the three. If you wish to continue with
this thread then I ask that you spend a little more of
your time answering ALL questions so that you use
up less of my own time. It's valuable too!

Sorry.

The IP settings look fine - no problem there. Here is what
I would do next:

1. Remove the NVIDIA NIC from Red. You don't need
it and it only adds to the confusion.

2. Connect the network cable to Red's integrated NIC.

3. Turn off the firewalls on Red and on Slammer.

4. Start a Command Prompt on Red (Start / cmd / {OK})
and type these commands:
ping slammer {Enter}
ping 192.168.1.1 {Enter}
Report the results.

5. Start a Command Prompt on Slammer (Start / cmd / {OK})
and type these commands:
ping Red {Enter}
ping 192.168.1.1 {Enter}
Report the results.

I expect to see the results from Steps 4 and 5 in your reply.

Sorry about all the difficult communication. I appreciate your time. The
Nividia card is resident on the Mother board but I disabled it. I also
turned off the Windows Firwall on the 3com card. On Slammer I went to turn
off the Windows Firewall but the option to turn it on and the option to turn
it off are grayed out?

Still Ping?
