Remote desktop XP Pro to XP Home

Walter Cohen

Hello.
I have an XP Pro desktop here at home.
My son is going off to college later this summer and will be taking a
desktop with XP Home on it.
I'd like to be able to use MS Remote Desktop Connection from home (Win XP
Pro) to his desktop (Win XP Home) in case I need to troubleshoot his system
while he's at college.

I think this can be done, is that true? Would I encounter any problems
getting into his machine through the college network?
I'd like to enable what I need to on his machine before I take it (and him)
to college.

Thanks!
Walter

Remote Assitance to XP Home - yes.
Remote Desktop to XP Home - no.
UltraVNC or TightVNC - sure.
The only trouble you might have is the configuration of any external
firewalls involved where ever your son will be connected.

You have it backwards. Almost any Win OS can manage a XP pro remote
desktop. (98,2K, XP)

Bummer.
I'd hate to have to upgrade his HOME to PRO just to get the remote desktop.
There is no way to get the remote desktop functionality added into HOME?
I know the college supports remote desktop because I see links/references to
it in many of theor online documents.

Oh well, time to check out UltraVNC or TightVNC. Which one is easier to
configure/use?

Thanks.

Nope, no way to add Remote Desktop "host" functionality to XP Home other
than to upgrade to XP Pro...

I'd say its a toss up as to which is easier to setup, ie. UltraVNC versus
TightVNC. I always recommend UltraVNC because of its available encryption
plug-in...
