Remote Desktop setup for 2 laptops on Adhoc Wireless Network

A

Alan C. Brown

I have 2 laptops running on XP Pro SP2, and have them connected through an
adhoc "peer to peer" wireless network (Windows firewall is ON, and data
encryption is enabled on both).

Would appreciate if anyone can advise on the requirements & procedure for
setting up Remote Desktop through the adhoc wireless network, and NOT
through the internet.

Thank you

Its really no different connecting over an adhoc link versus the internet.
Call direct using the private IP of the PC you want to connect to. You need
to setup an exception in the XP SP2 Windows Firewall for TCP Port 3389.

This presumes you have Remote Desktop enabled on the PC you want to control
*AND* have administrator privileges or are a member of the Remote Desktop
Users Group on the PC.

Al

Thank you very much for your reply/info.

It was as simple as you indicated. A lot simpler than setting up the adhoc
wireless network.

With both laptops connected to the Adhoc Wireess Network:

- enabled Remote Desktop on the "host" laptop.
- was automatically specified as a User in the Remote desktop User's Group.
- on the Remote laptop, setup an exception in Windows Firewall for "Remote
Desktop".
- from the Client laptop dialed-up the Remote Desktop using it's Wireless IP
address.

Did not have to setup an exception in the XP SP2 Windows Firewall for TCP
Port 3389. Just "Remote Desktop".

Can both laptops be setup as the Remote and Client at the same time, so that
they can be operated alternatively (i.e.not at the same time) as Remote
(host) and Client ?
