Remote Desktop/RDP (MSTSC.exe) won't start

I have windows XP Home, when I try to run MSTSC.exe, nothing happens
- computer pauses for a moment and then nothing loads. If I look in task
manager
MSTSC.exe is running under processes (in fact usually multiple copies of
MSTSC.exe as I have usually clicked on Remote Desktop several times in
frustration). Now the strange part if I delete MSTSC.exe and mstscax.dll
from the system 32 folder -- Remote desktop reverts back to an earlier
version which loads fine. However as soon as I do windows update or try to
reinstall RDP 6 from file (WindowsXP-KB925876-x86-ENU.exe) I get the same
problem. I have tried reinstalling windows (repair - not full reinstall) and
Remote desktop 5.1 works fine but as soon as I do a windows update, I am back
to square one. Is there a service that needs to be running? Am I missing
some other system file that RDP 6 requires but not RDP 5? I would like to
have RDP 6 so that I can log on to a Vista machine.

Thanks,
Sean

I am not a Vista expert but I have no problem using mstsc.exe V5 on
my WinXP PC when establishing a Remote Desktop session on a Vista
host.

Conversely I get an error message when I try to run mstsc.exe V6
on my WinXP PC. It is obviously not meant to run here. You will
probably see the same error message when you run the mstsc.exe
from a Command Prompt (which you should always do when
trouble-shooting!) instead of the Run box.

Since it'll likely be a few more months before RDP 6.1 is released you
*could* try installing XP SP3 as it does include RDP 6.1. Anything in
the event viewer that might tell us something more?

Check mstsc.exe.mui and another mui file under <LANG> directory under
SYSTEM32, to be sure they are the new version... Under my computer,
fr-FR directory had the right version, but not the ca-FR directory...
Copied them manually, and fixed my problem. Even found out
aaclient.dll.mui not to be updated by SP3...

Take a look at the c:\windows\system32\[lang]\ folder. This folder contains
*.mui files, change the name from mstsc.exe.mui to mstsc.exe.old.

This should work
