remote desktop errors on connect

somehow, my remote desktop client stopped working. I get a "this program
has encountered a problem and needs to close" whenever I connect to a
remote computer. I think the error doesn't occur until the connection is
made b/c it says "connecting..." for a few secs then gives the error. If
I type in the wrong address on purpose, I just get a cannot connect
error but no stop. The host IS up and working b/c I can connect from
another PC, also running xp sp3, on the same LAN as the PC on which I get
this error.

I've reinstalled sp3 to no avail.

detail of the error:

AppName: mstsc.exe AppVer: 6.0.6001.18000 ModName: mstscax.dll
ModVer: 6.0.6001.18000 Offset: 0015b2f5

I downloaded remote desktop client but it would not install b/c existing
version is newer.

any help appreciated.

thank you! I took these files

mstscax.dll
mstsc.exe

from an sp2 machine and copied them over (must be in safe mode) and now
I'm ok.
