remote desktop is failing with error as I try to access remote ser

remote desktop encounters a problem and closes -- cannot access my remote
server

error message
Faulting application mstsc.exe, version 6.0.6001.18000, faulting module
mstscax.dll, version 6.0.6001.18266, fault address 0x0015bcfa.

I am attempting to use remote desktop after starting up a VPN session.
VPN is running before I start remote desktop. IS this proper?

do I need to download a new version of remote desktop?

i have installed SP3.
