Remote Desktop Question

I have Vista Ultimate on my computer and would like to know if it is
possible using Remote Desktop Connection to connect to my laptop with Vista
Home Premium? and also how do I find the FQDN of the laptop?

Hi,

Vista Home Premium cannot be the host of a remote desktop session, only the
client. You could use the laptop to remote into the Vista Ultimate, but not
the reverse. To be a host, you must be using Ultimate, Business, or
Enterprise versions of Vista. Any version can be used as a client for
accessing a host system.

Install TightVNC on both - if you want one or the other machine to be
permanently listening you can choose to install the host as a Windows
Service. You may have to open a port on the host if you use the firewall
or on the router if you have one.

You will be able to log in to any machine, Linux or Windows including
via the internet if you wish.

No it would be possible from Ultimate to Home premium but would be
possible from Home premium to Ultimate as the server software is not
implemented in Home Premium only the Client.

No, it's the other way around. The computer *to* which you want to connect
(the laptop) is the host and the computer *from* which you want to connect
(Vista Ultimate) is the client.

There are various free programs like TightVNC (already suggested) or
UltraVNC to do this. A commercial program I like (the only Symantec product
I *do* like) is pcAnywhere.

Basically you will need to:

1. Set a static IP address on the host (laptop).
2. Open ports in your router (refer to whatever program you choose for which
ports to open).
3. Forward those ports (done on the router) to the static IP of the laptop.
