Remote Desktop on Dual Boot System

Hi all,

I've got a dual boot setup on my computer. Windows XP Pro is on my C drive
and Windows Vista Business is on the 2nd D drive. I have set up both for
Remote Desktop -- I want to be able to access my home computer (which as the
dual boot setup) from my laptop at work. The remote desktop feature works
fine when I access Windows XP from my work laptop. In other words, when I
leave my home computer on at home and it's booted into Windows XP at home, I
can access the home computer from work just fine. But, when I leave the home
computer on and it's booted into Vista, I can't gain access to the home
computer from my work laptop. It just won't connect. I know that I've got
the Remote Access feature enabled in Vista (it's actually the default), and
I am using a password on both my XP and Vista setups.

Any ideas if I can get Remote Desktop to work on a dual boot system like
this? Thanks for the input.

Hello,

You may need to allow Remote Desktop through your firewall.

- Click start
- Click Control Panel
- Click Security
- Click Windows Firewall
- Click "Allow a program through Windows Firewall" in the left
- Put a checkmark next to Remote Desktop and click OK

Thanks for your response on this remote desktop question. I did what you
suggested but it did not resolve the problem. I also tried just disabling
the Windows firewall with the same result.

I was wondering if the difficulty might stem from the fact that Vista is
installed on a separate D drive? I read somewhere, I think, that Vista will
think it's the C drive when you boot into it, but it's actually not a C
drive. Maybe Remote Desktop from my work laptop is looking for Vista on C
and can't really find it there? Just a thought.

I'd appreciate any other input on this problem. Anybody else out there with
a similar dual boot system and running into the same symptom with Remote
Desktop? Is Remote Desktop working for anyone with a dual boot setup?

Thanks.

I am running XP Pro and Vista Business in a dual boot configuration at home.
I use VistaBootPro to switch the default operating system to the one I want
to connect to then reboot the computer and then can connect to either XP Pro
or Vista Business. I don't remember doing anything "special" to get the
Vista remote desktop to work other than allowing the user access via
Computer/System Properties/Remote and checking the "Allow users to connect
remotely"; look at the list of remote users and make certain the user you
want has access.
