Remote desktop connection through a router

I have a laptop and a desktop (both XP Pro) connected tto
a router. The desktop is connected via cat5 and the
laptop is using a wireless connection to the router. Both
can access the WAN via the cable modem connected to the
router, and both computers can ping each other as well as
the router, but I cannot establish a remote desktop
connection to the desktop from the laptop. It says that
the remote computer is not responding. What am I doing
wrong? The router is setup with a a connection using the
ip addr of desktop, both TCP and UDP, with public and
private ports of 3389. I have the laptop remote
connection setup utilizing the ip addr of the desktop.
What am I missing? Can this not be done?

First, if this is over the private LAN then you don't need to forward any ports. Are you sure your
calling the correct IP? What is the exact error message(s)? If your using DHCP assigned IP addresses
on your LAN then its possible you may be calling the incorrect IP address. Also, make sure Remote
Desktop is enabled on the target PC.

I believe the problem is that the RRAS (remote access and
routing service is not starting. I have all the
dependencies started RPC, Telephony, andyet this service
just will not start on either system. And it lists a 340
error in the service log. What is stopping RRAS from
starting?
