Remote Desktop Connection Problem

I'm trying to setup a remote desktop connection from my WinXP Pro box to
another XP Pro box. I think that I missed a step. Here is what I tried
doing:

Define the VPN Network Connection (done only once).
1) Start | Accessories | Communications | New Connection Wizard
2) Click Next
3) Select "Connect to the network at my workplace". Click Next
4) Select "Virtual Private Network connection". Click Next
5) Enter "Church" as the Company Name. Click Next
6) Assuming that you have an always on connection, select "Do not dial
initial connection". Click Next.
7) Enter "vpn.thesitehere.com". Click Next
8) Click Finish

Define the Connection to the Church Network
1) Start | Control Panel | Network Connections | Church
2) Enter your Church userid and password
3) Click Connect (this was successful)

Start the Remote Desktop
1) Start | Accessories | Communications | Remote Desktop Connection
2) Enter the IP address of a Churchcomputer such as "192.168.1.17"
3) Click on Options
4) Enter your Church user name, password, and domain
Should anything else be set in the Options?
4) Click Connect

This is where the error message popped up about not being able to start
the desktop.

Any suggestions on where to start looking?

Oh. I do have a linksys firewall router and ZoneAlarm running if that
makes any difference.

If the church computer is connected to the Internet at all times, you do not need to establish a Remote VPN connection. Simply launch the Remote Desktop Connection utility and enter the IP address of the church computer, or the host name, if you know it.

If you're using a router on the church end, port 3389 must be forwarded to the pc that you wish to connect to, and the computer's firewall must be set to allow traffic on 3389.

Thank you. Port 3389 is now open. That, however, was not the final
problem. The church is behind a router using subnet 192.168.1.x. My
home PC is also behind a router using the same subnet. When I entered
the church PCs IP, RDC thought that I was trying to connect to something
