desktop connection on my computer and set the remote users. i also
forwarded port 3389 on my router to the correct computers IP. i can
connect to this computer fine within my LAN. but When i try to do this
over the internet i get a message saying something like the remote
computer could not be found.

If you can connect over your local LAN then it comes down to either an
addressing issue from the remote location or port fowarding through the
router. See this page for troubleshooting help...

Note that to test through your router you must be at a remote location
(logically). Its not a valid test to call the target RDP host from another
local PC using the public address (IP or fully qualified domain name) of the
router.
