I have two computers at home, a desktop and my laptop. Its my
understanding that with windows xp I can now connect these two
computers to share files and software without having to install pc
anywhere or any other software of that kind. I have tried to search on
how to do this and have come up with no luck. Everything that I do find
requires me to be an admistrator. I need to be able to access my office
desktop from my laptop can anyone help? THANKS

If you are trying to "connect" two computers, there is more than one way.
The easiest and most common is to use the RJ45 Ethernet ports that are
probably built in to each machine.

If you use a router or a switch, each computer will have it's own Ethernet
modular network cable that connects to the router. If you connect without a
router, you need a special Ethernet cable that reverses two of the wires so
you can run one cable from PC to PC without a router or switch.

Once you make a proper hardware connection, you can allow XP to search for
available network resources. Each PC should find the other. The only
resources available to each PC, will be the ones that are shared on the
other PC. You should be able to share folders, disks, printers and fax
driver printers.

Cheers

yeh, you can connect them. firstly, does each machine have an ethernet port,
whereas you can connect the two with an ethernet cable? also, do you have
dsl? can each machine connect to the internet?

Yes they both have ethernet prot and they both have internet connection.
the laptope is wireless.
