Remote Assist

My comp. = Win XP Home
Brother's comp. = Win XP Pro

My Brother can connect to me.
I cannot connect to him ,,, get error msg. "cannot resolve host name"
There is a web site, GRC.COM, where you can have all your ports scanned, (a security check), they also report the DNS# for your comp. I had my comp. scanned then created a Remote Assist invitation ,,, GRC reported the same DNS# that was contained in the RA invitation, therefore my comp. can be connected to.
My brother repeated the same procedure I did and GRC reported a DNS# of 74.167.132.120, but the DNS# in his invite to me was 192.168.1.3 ,,,, the two DNS#'s do not match, therefore cannot connect to him and get error msg.
A talk with his ISP was no joy, they said all they do is furnish the Internet connection and this is a Microsoft problem.

Bottom line is, there is an alien DNS# between me and my brother. Who owns it and what is it doing there.

Thanks for any help or input.

Hi Bob

The DNS# you refer to is called the IP address.

192.168.1.3 is the format of a local network IP address. It's probably been
given to the computer by a router.

You don't say this, but I suspect your brother is creating the remote
assistance request while disconnected from the internet, then connecting to
the internet to send it. Have him connect to the internet, then create the
request and send it.

You may also want to have a wee look at

Thanks Graham ,,,, not so, my brother was connected, and is connected 24/7.
Have already viewed your links, plus many, many more.

From what you said, it appears the ISP is using a router, is there a way around it or get through it ,,, or perhaps brother is set up as a local Network even though he is a single comp.

OK. I would guess your brother is set up as anetwork with two devices on it
- his PC and router. Have a look at this

http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-6263_11-5195001-2.html

If you amend the file sent by your brother to change the internal address to
his external address (easiest way to find his external address is go to
www.whatismyip.com). Now set port forwarding on the router (which I admit is
easier said than done, although the router manual should explain how to do
this) to forward port 3389 traffic to the internal address of your brothers
PC (which you'll get from the original file sent).

If there's a firewall in place (eg Zone Alarm, or Windows Firewall), you may
also need to tweak this to allow traffic on port 3389.

Good luck

Graham

Thank you very much for your help, However, the deeper we dig into this project the more we realize we are in way over our heads. I have reviewed your links and they are good one's, I have also found many more, of special interest is http://portforward.com/routers.htm . I think we now have enough information to keep us busy for a while (learning curve).

We can now consider this thread to be in a state of hibernation.

Thanks again
