remote assistance

Bryce

I want to be able to help my brother on his computer.

I have him signed in with the windows messenger. we can type back and forth
no problem.

He goes to "Actions" and clicks on "Ask for Remote Assistance..."

The "My Contacts" dialog box appears and he clicks on my name.

On his computer it says, "You have invited Bryce to start using Remote
Assistance. Please wait for a response or Cancel the pending invitation.

On my computer it says then, "so-and-so is inviting you to start using
Remote Assistance. Do you want to Accept or Decline.

I click on Accept.

Then it says, "You have accepted the invitation from Osaka to start using
Remote Assistance".

From there on nothing happens for either of us.

His screen just sits there on "you have invited Bryce to ......."

and my screen sits on "you have accepted the invitation from so and so....."

What are we missing on?

I could never get it to work, then I installed WINDOWS messenger 5 update -
which I DON'T use, I use MSN Messenger 6.2 - and it works fine now. Having
Windows Messenger installed (but not necessarily using it) seems to fix the
problem.

Give it a go.

Probably nothing, although, after about 30 seconds, you should get a
message that the connection could not be established.

Are either of you using routers? Try temporarily disconnecting them
(both of them) and see if it works.

Remote assistance (which is a wonderful tool) requires port 3389. Some
routers block that port. Linksys and D-Link do NOT, from what I've
seen, but Belkin and some others do. And, with MY brother's Belkin
router, NOTHING that we have tried -- including telling the router to
unblock (forward) that port or even turning on DMZ -- has helped. But
if he bypasses the router (connects the PC directly to the cable modem),
the problem goes away.

That's the most likely cause of your problems, a router at one end
(either end) blocking that particular port.
