Remote access to another machine

I'm trying to set up my WIN/XP machine to access a WIN/XP
network in another country. The Help info WIN/XP gives
stops making sense halfway through and what I have
cobbled together trying to make sense of it doesn't
work. When I type smtp.xxxxx.com in the address bar of
Internet Explorer, I get a 500 error message (Internal
server error) which kinda says I've screwed up this end.
The Help info that is meaningless on my machine is :-
*******
Open Internet Services Manager. <<SNIP>>

To open Internet Services Manager, click Start, point to
All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then
click Internet Services Manager.
****
When I click on Start, All Programs there is
no "Administrative Tools" listed. Eventually found it
under COntrol Panel / Perf & maint.
There's no "Internet Services Manager" there so I click
on Internet Information Services and follow the rest of
the help to the letter.
Doesn't work - 500 error!

Fixed this thus far - I should have typed the smtp
address into Accessories / Communications, not IE. I now
have another problem - separate post coming up.
