Administrative Tools for Setting up Remote Connection

W

Wes

I am trying to set up my desk top as the terminal for
remote connection. I am using XP Pro w/SP1. The
instructions say I need to open "Administrative Tools",
then click on "Internet Services Manager" in order to
access a hierarchical folder string to eventually reach
and edit the properties in the "tsweb folder". The
problem is I do not have an "Administrative Tools" option
available to me in the "All Programs" drop-down menu, and
the Administrative Tools link available through the
control Panel does not have an "Internet Services Manager"
option. I have conducted searches for all of these
components to no avail. Where and how can I reach the
TSWEB folder so I can open and edit its properties
correctly?

Yes, I mean "remote desktop conenction". And, I have
already explored the FAQs and a number of other Help
areas, including articles written on the subject, but none
address my question. The question is, how do I find the
Internet Services Manager, when it does not appear to
exist on my computer?

If you want to use the web based method of Remote Desktop access...On your XP Pro box open "Start ->
Help and Support". Search on 'remote desktop' and look at the last two items in the "Suggested
Topics -> Pick a task" section. They will explain how to both install IIS and the RD Web service and
how to connect.

Otherwise, look at these links for help...

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/gomobile/remotedesktop/default.asp
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/focuson/remotedesktop.asp

Note that if your trying to access your desktop over the public internet and your desktop is behind
a firewall/NAT/router, you will need to forward both TCP Port 80 (IIS) and TCP Port 3389 (RDP). Also
note that some ISPs block TCP Port 80 because running web servers violates the user terms of usage
agreements.

If all you want is to enable remote desktop connection, first FAQ should
help, there is no need to touch internet services manager, can you tell me
where you find the instruction.

. How do I turn on Remote Desktop?

A. Right-click My Computer, click Properties, and then click the
Remote tab. Turn on Remote Desktop by selecting the check box Allow users to
remotely connect to this computer. Designate users by clicking the Select
Remote Users... button.

You need to install IIS first... Then you will get ISM...

The tsweb is located in the C:\WINDOWS\WEB folder (after you install
IIS).

I think your answer is in Al's post, but the short answer is the docs are
wrong.

Right click My Computer, choose manage, expand services and applications,
expand Internet Information services and the things beneath it.

I found the instructions in the "Help" under the
subject "To install Remote Desktop Web Connection". It
reads, in part:

Open Internet Services Manager.
Expand the folder hierarchy until you reach the local
computer name\Web Sites\Default Web Site\tsweb folder.
Right-click the tsweb folder and then click Properties.
Click the Directory Security tab on the Properties dialog
box.
In Anonymous access and authentication control, click
Edit....
Check the Anonymous access check box on the Authentication
Methods dialog box, and then click OK twice. Further, in
the "Notes" area it states:

To open Internet Services Manager, click Start, point to
All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then
click Internet Services Manager. Internet Information
Services is installed on Windows XP Professional by
default.
