Remote Access timeouts

When I tried Remote Access with my friend in texas the other day, the
connection timed out. Any ideas on how to increase that timeout?

Based on the note below (from Help and Support), do any of these factors
apply? Could the problem be in the way dialup properties are configured for
one of you, etc? Are either of you on a network?

"For the Routing and Remote Access service, authorization of the connection
is determined by the dial-up properties of the user account and remote
access policies. Remote access policies are a set of conditions and
connection settings that give network administrators more flexibility in
granting remote access permissions and usage. If the settings of the
connection do not match at least one of the remote access policies that
apply to your connection, the connection attempt is rejected, regardless of
the dial-up properties of the user account. "
