Reminders in BCM issue

We use BCM between several users. We synch using export / import, then a
Back- up of the merged d/b is Restored to each machine.

From the Account screen, the user clicks on New, Task, (add some detail),
Reminder (set for date time etc), and then on the bottom via Contacts he /she
will manually attach this task to the Account.

After the merge, when the call back reminders come through, the user CANNOT
drill through to the account which was attached?

The error is "Cannot perform the requested operation, the command selected
is not valid for the recipient".

The user will only ever call back on their own accounts so I can’t see why
this happens or what the answer may be?

This may sound small but it’s very important to us – can anyone help please?

Thank you.

Unfortunately, this is the case with BCM. The functionality of the contact
field at the bottom was replaced with the link feature of BCM. In order to
link the task to an account, you should either open the account, click on the
new button in the account form, and then task. This will automatically link
the task to the account. The other option is to create a task like normal and
then click on the link button on the BCM toolbar. Then choose the account you
want to link it to.

When the reminder pops up, in order to find what account it is linked to you
must click on the link button and it will display the name of the account,
contact, or business opportunity it is linked to. That is how it works in
BCM. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick reply. I understand the answer and I’m sure you agree
that this functionality is a bit disappointing, however I’m still a little
confused.

We link to the account now by going to the contact field at the foot of the
task screen and browsing to the account. Once selected and saved you can then
drill into the account from this screen. This is cumbersome but works ok.

My problem is that this drill through facility is lost after a data merge
between 2 users. The originating user gets the error message implying that
the record / update does not belong to them, when it does (!)....also we have
merged before in this way and this problem has only just arisen?

How crazy is it that you can’t simply link a reminder to an account and
drill through to that account?

If you just recently installed the BCM v.2 update, this could cause the
issue. If you were merging using regular contact folders and the business
contact folder, this could have caused the problem as well.

I also misled you in the sense that the contact linking wasn't "replaced",
you still can use it, but when merging between computers (especially non BCM
and BCM folders) the linking can stop working, because now the link includes
the computer name it originated from, not just the name of the contact. I
believe one way to resolve this is to use a shared database, which you can
now do in BCM v.2. There is no quick-fix that I know of to get the
functionality back that you lost, however, without going through and manually
selecting the contact you want the task to "drill through" to.
